<image:title>About Skipper - Hi! My name is Curtis L. Hill, but you can call me Skipper.</image:title>
<image:caption>Skipper is my nickname. My father was in the navy when I was born which will suffice as a brief explanation. Curtis Lee is my given name. After obtaining a degree in theoretical mathematics from Auburn University I spent 35 years in the software industry. When I was young I always wanted to teach. Marriage and family led me into the software business as a means of making a living. But in 2012 I made the decision to pursue my desire to teach and began tutoring in 2013. I have loved every minute of it. The first half of my professional career was focused on becoming an expert software technologist. The last twenty years were dedicated to leading teams of software engineers and developing my management skills. I rose to the Vice President level and managed international software engineering teams as large as 600 engineers. During my career I taught many aspects of software engineering to my fellow engineers. I also mentored many young managers as part of succession planning. These experiences confirmed that I really wanted to teach. My tutoring style is upbeat, positive, and goal oriented. Once I understand the student's targets I strive to help the student achieve them. I focus on developing a positive relationship with the student from the very beginning. Being a life long learner I understand and appreciate the effort that goes into fully understanding a topic. I believe in the power of using Socratic questioning to evaluate whether or not the student truly understands a concept. I believe in homework. The Math section of my web site describes the relationship between homework students are given at school and the tutoring process. For SAT/ACT tutoring homework is central to the methodology. My students present with a variety of learning targets and a wide range of learning differences. My instructional strategies are differentiated according to the needs of each individual. I adjust my pace and deliver examples that scaffold together in a way every student can understand. I love tutoring and I can't wait to partner with you to help your child succeed. <image:title>Tutoring - Math Tutoring</image:title>
<image:caption>During the school year the tutoring process is tied to the homework and test schedule of the student. The first goal is to have the student fully comprehend the material being studied. Secondly, the student must perform enough repetitions in each area to be able to retain the information long term. This often means creating additional sample problems in areas of concern and even giving additional homework where necessary. Many students are not able to comprehend 100% of the material in class at the pace set by the teacher. Often the tutoring sessions use the nightly homework to find gaps in the students knowledge and fill them. Sessions prior to tests focus on reviewing the material the test will cover. This also often reveals weaknesses that must be corrected prior to the test.</image:caption>

You are asked to improve the author's word usage, topic development, or passage structure Approximately half the questions are grammar based. A consistent set of ~50- 100 grammar rules are tested. Answer the questions as you go in the Writing and Language Section Read the entire sentence that contains the underlined portion Look at the answer choices to determine if more reading before or after the sentence is required Eliminate obviously wrong choices If multiple answers are grammatically correct the most concise answer is almost always the proper choice Focus on the meaning and use of common introductory/transition words and phrases - also, therefore, furthermore, however, in addition, in conclusion, etc. Often the SAT will add one or more dependent clauses in a sentence to make the sentence difficult to read. If a dependent clause is not part of the underlined portion reread the sentence without it for greater clarity Eliminate redundancies   and more...</image:caption>

<image:caption>The SAT Math Test is broken into two sections: No-calculator section Calculator section   Skip the obviously hard/tedious problems and come back to them at the end For geometry questions label the picture given with the facts given if a picture is provided. If there is no picture draw and label your own. Avoid careless mistakes. Here are the top three mistakes to avoid: Not answering exactly the question asked for - the last sentence in a math problem will almost always be where you will find exactly what you are being asked to solve for. Underline the piece that states exactly what is being asked for and answer that. Missing a negative - be very careful to distribute all negatives where necessary Missing a simple calculation - DO NOT DO CALCULATIONS IN YOUR HEAD Immediately after reading the math question look at the answer choices. This will tell you/remind you of the format the answer is in and possibly other clues to the right answer Create a math formula/fact sheet and write down any formula or fact you need to know - review this sheet until memorized prior to the test Trust your instincts - often the only clear attack is the right attack but the final answer may not reveal itself at first. <image:title>ACT/SAT More Info - SAT/ACT What's the difference?</image:title>
<image:caption>The primary difference between the two tests is one of style. The SAT asks questions in a very different way than what the student is used to in high school. This requires the student to 'learn' the SAT question style as part of the preparation process. The ACT is a more straightforward academic exercise but the ACT places a premium on speed. Students that are good in Science and work quickly will probably score better on the ACT. Students that feel more comfortable at a slower pace and don't do well in science will probably score better on the SAT. We can help you understand which test is likely best for you but the only way too be sure which test is best for you is to take both.</image:caption>
